RFID tags

RFID tags (Radio Frequency Identification) are an essential component of modern automatic identification and data capture systems. They allow products, assets, equipment and other items to be identified and tracked wirelessly, providing greater visibility and automation across industries such as logistics, retail, warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare and asset management.

Unlike traditional barcodes, RFID tags do not require direct line of sight with the reader. This allows multiple tagged items to be identified quickly and automatically, making RFID technology an effective solution for applications where speed, traceability and inventory accuracy are critical.

How Do RFID Tags Work?

An RFID tag generally consists of an electronic chip and an antenna. When the tag enters the reading range of a compatible RFID reader, the reader communicates with the tag and captures the information stored on it. This data can then be transferred to inventory management, ERP, WMS or other business systems.

Depending on the technology and application, RFID tags can be supplied in different shapes, sizes and materials, including labels, hard tags, cards and specialised industrial tags.

Types of RFID Tags

Passive RFID Tags: These tags do not contain their own battery. They receive the energy required for communication from the RFID reader's signal, making them a cost-effective option for applications such as inventory management, product identification and logistics.

Active RFID Tags: Active tags incorporate an internal battery, allowing them to transmit signals over longer distances and support applications requiring extended reading ranges or continuous tracking.

Semi-Passive RFID Tags: These tags include a battery that powers the internal electronics while communication with the reader is still based on the reader's RF signal. They can be useful for specialised applications requiring additional functionality.

Key Benefits of RFID Tags

Fast and automated identification: RFID technology can identify multiple tagged items simultaneously, significantly reducing the time required for inventory counts and other identification processes.

No line of sight required: RFID tags can be read without having to position the tag directly in front of the reader, providing greater flexibility than conventional barcode technology.

Improved inventory accuracy: Automated identification helps reduce manual counting and data entry, improving inventory visibility and reducing the risk of human error.

Enhanced traceability: RFID tags allow companies to monitor the movement of products, components and assets throughout different stages of the supply chain.

Greater operational efficiency: Automated data capture reduces repetitive manual tasks and helps employees complete inventory, receiving, shipping and tracking processes more quickly.

Durability: RFID tags are available in materials and configurations designed for demanding environments, including applications exposed to moisture, dust, temperature variations, chemicals or mechanical stress.

Contactless identification: Because RFID technology works wirelessly, tags can be identified without physical contact, making them suitable for high-volume and automated environments.

RFID Tag Applications

Warehousing and Logistics: RFID tags can be attached to products, boxes, pallets and containers to improve inventory control, receiving, shipping and supply chain traceability.

Retail: Retailers use RFID tags to improve stock visibility, perform faster inventory counts, locate products and reduce discrepancies between physical and system inventory.

Manufacturing: RFID tags help track components, work-in-progress and finished products throughout production processes, providing greater visibility and traceability.

Asset Management: Equipment, tools, containers and other valuable assets can be tagged and monitored to improve location management and reduce losses.

Healthcare: RFID tags can be used for tracking medical equipment, supplies and other assets, helping organisations improve visibility and operational efficiency.

RFID Tags vs. Barcode Labels

RFID and barcode technologies can complement each other. While barcode labels require optical scanning and generally need to be visible to the scanner, RFID tags can be read wirelessly and multiple tags can often be captured simultaneously. This makes RFID particularly useful for automated inventory and tracking applications.

Many businesses use both technologies depending on the specific requirements of each process, combining the flexibility and affordability of barcodes with the automation and traceability capabilities of RFID.

Choosing the Right RFID Tag

When selecting an RFID tag, it is important to consider the RFID frequency, required reading range, tag size and shape, attachment method, environmental conditions and the material to which the tag will be applied.

For example, specialised RFID tags may be required for metal surfaces, industrial environments, reusable containers or applications exposed to extreme temperatures. The tag must also be compatible with the RFID readers and antennas used in the system.
